The best scientists and explorers have the attributes of kids. They ask questions and have a sense of wonder. They have curiosity; who, what, where, when, why and how!

Meet our Staff Team

The Wasteland Plan Foundation was founded in August 2018. Since its origin, the team and mission have evolved.

In late 2019, Niki Cesta and Savannah Stephen teamed up. As Co-Founders, they share a deep reverence for our earth and alignment in the TWP mission to foster community connection through waste education, nature reconnection and conservation-based solutions. In mid-2020, Anthony Robert-Frigon joined the team as Creative Director and began to document the TWP intention.

In early 2022, TWP Foundation became incorporated as a not-for-profit. Today, our volunteer-driven team continues to expand. Read more below.

  • Co-Founder/Executive Director

Niki Cesta is a Conservation Biologist, Water-woman and Lands Coordinator. Her rigorous underwater training and work across marine conservation has guided her to forge a deep connection to our oceans and lakes where she explores with compassion and curiosity.

Niki is a trained scuba divemaster, sailor, freediver and yoga instructor. Her understanding of the waste crisis comes from a dynamic combination of academia and adventure. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Masters of Environmental Science supported by 8 years of in-field conservation research, expedition guiding and environmental program coordination. Her work has primarily spanned 4 countries including Greece, Ecuador, the Cayman Islands and Canada.

From 2015 - 2020, Niki lived mostly barefoot, out of a 50L backpack. Most notably, her role as a Marine Station Manager in the Galapagos Islands in 2018 is what planted the seed that later bloomed into The Wasteland Plan Foundation. In early March 2023, Niki began in a full-time hybrid role as a Land Code Coordinator with Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government in British Columbia where she coordinates a community-driven land management process whereby the Nation enters into an agreement with Canada to ‘regain’ self-governing authority, traditional law-making powers, and legal jurisdiction of their reserve lands.

Niki is captivated by the relationship between nature conservation and community reconnection, (specifically through wellness and recreation) and how it can create equitable, positive socio-environmental impact!

  • Co-Founder/Program Director

Savannah Stephen is a Permaculturist, Adventure Guide and Environmental Advocate who embodies the art of living simply with a reverence to the earth. This is observed in her calm, centered, and gentle disposition when guiding communities through TWP events and eco-exploration. Building community with a keen curiosity of the world around her, Savannah’s diverse outdoor training and skill level enrich the scope of learning for others.

Savannah began to join Niki on waste cleanups in late 2019. By early 2020 she had stepped into a founding role, and began to launch concepts that shaped our Environmental Innovation department. Savannah fosters an innovative, compassionate and equitable culture amongst all, bridging meaningful connections between humans and nature. She believes that outdoor experiences awaken our sense of responsibility to change the world for the better, as we glimpse the world at its best. Her keen awareness, curiosity, and aptitude in hazard assessment and risk management enable her to turn wilderness challenges into safe and effective learning opportunities.

Her academic qualifications in Outdoor Recreation combined with a Permaculture Design Certificate and extensive adventure travel, provides her with an interesting lens on Ontario's waste challenges. In addition to her cooking/food resourcefulness, Savannah is drawn to reimagining waste through her interests in foraging, edible gardens, and healthy, composted soils. As a black female entrepreneur, Savannah continues to reimagine more equitable and innovative solutions to combating waste across communities, with a focus on those who are marginalized.

  • Communications Director

Anthony Robert-Frigon is a progressive creator; videographer, producer and DJ. He has been an avid videographer since the age of 15 and is motivated by his passion to create positive change through his work. He is drawn to whatever can get his mind working and brings an empowering community together. Through the lens of @kwucreative, Anthony’s goal as Creative Director at TWP has been to grant our community an unfiltered look at what is occurring within the depths of our environment through the production of each TWP Earth Event video recap.

Anthony’s many travel journeys have emphasized to him what doing good work in this world truly takes. Upon returning from travels across South East Asia, he brought home the ritual to join change-makers on his birthday each year. For his 28th birthday month, Anthony decided to join Niki on her then solo cleanup journey. At Serena Gundy Park, Toronto on November 25th, 2018 Anthony was the second person to join Niki in her TWP efforts for Cleanup #18. Anthony’s eye for capturing the true essence of our mission today is the reason that we have strong visibility and a growing eco-community. He is consistently offering suggestions to expand community engagement, and to propel our overall mission.

Anthony continues to capture how TWP builds conservation-centric communities through our immersive offerings. His powerful video recaps always convey a strong environmental message. Spreading waste-awareness online to a wider following increases reach, which in turn increases potential for positive change. Anthony hopes that his ongoing work with TWP will continue to create a shift in how we choose to leave our mark.

Board of Directors

  • Head of Fundraising Committee
    Co-Founder of Our Home Refillery

Adriana grew up surrounded by music and nature. From a young age her family went camping weekly, where they swam all day, cooked and sang by the fire. Adriana continues these activities to this day. As immigrants, Adriana's parents taught her to appreciate nature and respect resources - reusing products, repurposing food scraps and clothing were practices that her parents instilled in her.

For many years Adriana has been passionate about making sure her body and home is filled with clean ingredients. Adriana and her sisters wanted to provide the same care for our home, Earth. Together they opened the online refill and low waste shop, Our Home Refillery. To help divert waste they start at the source and encourage sustainable practices such as refilling in reusable containers, choosing local brands and products, as well as non-toxic products for the home and body.

Adriana believes that what starts off as an individual or small group can lead to great changes, like TWP has done. When Adriana joined her first earth event, #Paddle4Plastics in 2021, she had just opened her Refillery and was looking for other ways to help.

Adriana also became a volunteer coordinator for A Greener Future's Butt Blitz. This campaign raises awareness on cigarette butt waste and helps remove them from our environment. Partnering with TerraCycle, these cigarette butts will be recycled and have a second life.

Adriana's involvement in climate actions are aligned with those of The Wasteland Plan. She is honoured to be joining the efforts of TWP. Channeling her skills and learning through this work, she hopes to grow the community, the connection with Earth and our impact on it.

  • Head of Governance Committee
    Bilingual Project Coordinator

Catherine grew up with a passion for animals and the outdoors. She was fortunate enough to go on many camping trips in her youth which gave her a foundational respect for nature. As her career evolved, she began working for a non-profit in the environmental sector that taught kids the importance of protecting the environment and animals. This was when Catherine realized how important it is to do our part and be more conscious of waste. Living in such an urban world, it’s easy to dismiss the actions of single-use plastics, because they really are everywhere. She believes that impact starts with small actions; once you recognize how much you use you begin to make a conscious effort to stop.

I found out about TWP through my older brother, which gave me the chance to meet the two amazing women behind TWP, and we bonded on our strong passion for protecting this one amazing planet that we have. My first event with TWP was “Paddle4Plastics” in 2020, and since that day she was hooked. As administrator of the Board and head of Governance, I will ensure that we as an organization stay on track of our goals and always strive to be better for our community. Working in my current role in governance at another non-profit, I am eager to bring past and present experiences to this organization to help TWP foster trust, unlock new opportunities, reduce risk, and ultimately grow into the best organization they can be.

Working alongside a group of passionate people all striving to make a difference is the reason why I am proud to be on the Board of Directors. If you haven't yet been to one of our events, I highly encourage you to come out and experience it!

  • Vice-Chair of the Board
    Head of Program Committee
    TDSB ESL Teacher

It’s Sarah McLaughlin, no not the singer- but equally loving of the arts and animals! Sarah’s first love was water and as a young child, her family could not get her out of it! The same is true today. She is an advanced certified scuba and freediver and has travelled the world exploring its waters and lands.

Sarah’s efforts to reduce our negative impact on nature began with her parents. Born in west Toronto in 1931- Great Depression/Industrial Revolution- her late, great Dad taught her that the three R’s are essential. He worked for Dynamic Living Inc., a biodegradable soap company. Sarah’s Mom came from Guyana, a third-world country where minimalism was crucial. Her first teachers would impart these values on her which she is grateful for.

Following the 2004 tsunami, Sarah was called to help clean up the devastation in Thailand. Prior to this, Sarah lived in Australia and learned about ways to keep our reefs at their best. At this time, she was working in radio broadcasting and knew the power of one’s voice. She would later become a teacher and understand a deeper responsibility to youth.

Sarah met biologist and filmmaker, Rob Stewart, after watching his documentary, Sharkwater. It was a time when the marriage between conservation and education formed wonderfully for her. She became an advocate for the protection of sharks, would help market the film in Canada and China, as well as conference with leading scientists/environmentalists, including Rex Wilder and Sea Shepherd captain, Paul Watson. Rob taught Sarah to teach kids the brutal truth, but finish the lesson with some outdoor fun. This is how kids learn preservation- when they know how much enjoyment it holds.

Niki and Savannah understand this concept and live it fully, and Sarah wishes to be a part of that. Anything she can do to grow this mindset makes her feel more purposeful, alive and in balance with the earth. She is honoured to be a member of the TWP team and looks forward to more fun.

  • Head of Communications Committee
    Founder of Nicola Woods Art

Nicola Woods is a fine art photographer who channels a love for trees and their flowers into shimmering images that resemble early forms of photography such as daguerreotypes. Inspired by the physical beauty and the symbolic meaning of trees she explores how they mark time and embody qualities of liberty, hope and grace. Woods holds a MFA from Johnson State College VT, has exhibited in North America and completed projects in art residencies around the world.

Nicola first met Niki and Savannah while attending a Breathing in Nature event that combined cold immersion with a beach cleanup. Impressed by their dedication and enthusiasm she joined them on several other clean up events and started her own personal cleanups while walking her dog. She is honoured to join the TWP team and looks forward to offering her artistic approach to support TWP’s mission, activities and positive results.

  • Head of Budgeting and Finance Committee
Founder of Wanderlight & Sunbreak Rental Managment

Alexandra’s love for the outdoors developed in her teenage years as she began to experience the diversity of nature in her travels. Decades later, she’s visited 60+ countries and has gained an even greater appreciation for the world’s most vulnerable destinations and our role in protecting them.

Whether it be creating eco-conscious travel products or implementing more sustainable products/practices at her vacation rentals, helping travelers explore responsibly is at the core of both of Alex’s businesses. Joining TWP’s Board and supporting their development of low impact, nature-based exploration was a natural fit.

With a Master’s degree specializing in Finance and years of experience working in the financial industry, she hopes to guide the organization towards strategic, data-driven growth.

  • Member of Program Committee
    IT, Computer Scientist

David Chen was born and raised in Jamaica whereby his parents were of Jamaican and Chinese ethnicity. After immigrating to Canada as a young man, David was focused on building an abundant future for himself. He graduated as an electrical engineer from Ryerson University, now referred to as 'Toronto Metropolitan University'.

By profession, David has worked in IT as a software developer for over fourteen years.

He loves outdoor activities including tennis, biking, hiking, rollerblading and snorkelling. He also loves yoga as it provides balance to his physical and mental state.

David is very concerned about present environment issues and how nature is being manipulated by organizations that exploit it for profits rather than protecting it for future generations..

Twp is a non-profit organization, with a bunch of members that see the issues that our beloved environment is enduring and trying their best to take action. This the reason why David chooses to be a part of this force that is fighting for change and spreading awareness.
